Service staff
Private butler
The one who opens the door, remembers every guest’s name, knows when to refill a glass and when to disappear. The most visible job in the house, and the most discreet.
Good service goes unnoticed. Its absence does not
Most owners think of the chef first. That is logical: the cooking is seen, tasted and discussed. Yet in a house that entertains, what tips a stay from comfortable to exceptional is usually the service.
A butler takes on everything nobody should have to watch: greeting arrivals, the table laid before anyone asks, drinks replenished without interrupting a conversation, the house put back in order while the guests are elsewhere.
The titles vary a great deal: butler, maître d’hôtel, house manager. They cover different realities from one house to the next. Rather than debating titles, we start from what you want to hand over, and look for the person who can do it.
The profiles
Three roles that are often confused
The butler
In direct service to the owners and their guests: the welcome, the service and daily comfort. The role often widens to supervising staff, organising receptions and the general running of the house. The most requested profile for a villa stay.
The maître d’hôtel
Focused on the table and the service of meals. Called upon for receptions or when dinners become frequent and formal.
The housekeeper
Responsible for the interior, the linen and the cleaning. She works alongside service, not in place of it.
How it works
Putting a butler in place
- 01
The scope
What you want to hand over in practice: the welcome, meal service, keeping the house, coordinating existing staff.
- 02
The frame
Duration, hours, how many people are in the house, how often you entertain, and whether other staff are employed.
- 03
Selection
Profiles available on your dates are presented, with their experience of private houses and the languages they speak.
- 04
Taking up the post
The habits of the house are passed on before the first day, so service is in place when guests arrive.
With the chef
The two roles work as a pair
Most butler requests arrive after a first experience with a private chef. The observation is always the same: the cooking was excellent, but somebody had to lay the table, serve, then clear, and that somebody was usually the hostess.
When both services are arranged together, the profiles are chosen to work as a pair. The chef stays in the kitchen, service holds the room, and the family no longer has to choose between enjoying their guests and running the dinner.
Without a butler, it is usually the housekeeper who is called on to lay, serve and clear. She leaves her own work, which falls behind, and performs a service that is not her trade. The house loses twice over.
Frequently asked
The butler, in practice
01Can I engage a butler for a single week?
Yes. Weekly placement is the most common arrangement, usually during a villa stay or a period when the house is entertaining heavily.
02Can one butler work alone?
For a modest house and limited guest numbers, yes. As soon as receptions follow one another or the property is large, a small team becomes necessary.
03Which languages do the profiles speak?
It depends on who is available. Language requirements are among the first selection criteria: state them with your request.
04Can the butler also cook?
They are distinct trades. A butler can handle simple preparation and breakfast service, but does not replace a chef for worked meals for several guests.
05How does it work with staff we already employ?
The division of duties is defined before arrival. This is essential: a butler joining an existing team needs to know precisely what is and is not his responsibility.
06Do you place butlers in permanent posts?
Yes. Year-round placement follows a different and longer process, described on the household staff placement page.
